Ruakaka Surf Life Saving Patrol

Established in 1960, the Ruakaka Surf Life Saving Patrol is one the oldest active club in Northland. Volunteer Surf Lifesavers patrol the beach every weekend between Labour Weekend and Easter; with paid lifeguards providing the service Monday to Friday during the peak summer season.

The club is entirely run by volunteers, and is responsible for lifeguarding, sport, and education services to its members and the local community. There is strong local membership, as well as a long history with Whangarei based members, many of whom have spent summers with us at Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park for generations.

The Junior Surf programme is also run by volunteers, and provides wonderful opportunities for children to learn new skills, make friends and enjoy the water as they graduate from Tadpoles to Nippers to Rookies (parents must be on the beach during training times). Those aged 14 and over can begin full Lifeguard Training and take their Surf Lifeguard Award exam. As well as making an important contribution to the community in helping to keep our beaches safe for swimmers, becoming a Surf Lifeguard can result in leadership, employment and personal development opportunities.
